“Northly,” David Toms and “Exposure,” Julie- ann Rowell

On September 11th, 2019, two fascinating books on related themes were launched. David Toms’ “Northly” is inspired by the landscape, customs and culture of the northern lands where he has lived, not only his native Ireland, but also Norway, where he has made his home.

“The nostalgia of the emigrant far from home is here coupled with an unrelenting realism in poems of clarity, vigour and beauty.” William Wall.

Julie-ann Rowell’s “Exposure” is a meditation on the life and history of Orkney, where she spends much of her time and where the Scottish and Norse cultures are intertwined.

“In this tender, vivid exploration of heart and place, Rowell opens us up to a geography and a community as she negotiates larger ideas of relationship. This is a book that burns brightly with honesty, and care.” Deryn Rees-Jones.

We were honoured to have the company of Her Excellency Else Berit Eikeland, Ambassador of Norway to Ireland, to launch both books.
